Orthopedic Specialist Baton Rouge
Dr. Arthur Hess is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon. He currently sees patients at the Bone and Joint Clinic of Baton Rouge.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Dr. Hess’s path to orthopedic medicine began after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Mathematics from the University of Dallas in 2004. Following graduation, Dr. Hess was accepted into the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where he excelled academically.
While at Tulane, Dr. Hess was honored to gain membership into the prestigious medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He also received the Louisiana State Medical Society Alliance Foundation Scholarship for outstanding academic performance and was honored with the George A. Adrouny Award which is presented to the medical student who received the highest marks in Biochemistry.
Dr. Hess completed his residency training at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program in 2014. During his time there, he served as the Chief Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and earned the Executive Committee Award for the highest cumulative score on the Orthopedics In-Training Exam (OITE).
Following his residency training, Dr. Hess completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at the University of Maryland’s prestigious R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the first and only integrated Trauma Hospital in the United States which is involved in innovative research and medical procedures for treating the severely injured.
ORTHOPEDIC SPECIALTIES
Dr. Hess’s fellowship training in orthopedic traumatology allows him to treat complex conditions in nearly every part of the body. He specializes in pelvic and acetabular (hip socket) surgeries, hip and knee arthritis, joint replacement, hip preservation, and complex reconstruction of knee, pelvic and acetabular fractures.
Among the most specialized treatments he performs is periacetabular osteotomy (PAO). This procedure is used in cases of hip dysplasia to improve coverage within the hip socket, minimize pain, and delay or prevent entirely the need for a hip replacement.
For those patients who do require hip replacements due to conditions such as end-stage arthritis, Dr. Hess uses a minimally invasive technique known as a direct anterior approach. This approach leads to smaller incisions, less muscle disruption, and a faster recovery.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
In addition to his private surgical practice, Dr. Hess works closely with Our Lady of the Lake Hospital as an orthopedic trauma director. Referencing his fellowship at the University of Maryland’s R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Dr. Hess steers the hospital’s trauma protocols and procedures.
Dr. Hess was also recently honored to take on the role of chairman for the Louisiana Arthritis Foundation.
